Stratospheric age of air

چکیده

The age of stratospheric air is computed with a trajectory model, using ECMWF ERA-40 3-D-Var and operational 4-D-Var winds. The sensitivity to the forecast period and assimilation technique are studied, and the results are compared with observations and with results from a chemistry transport model that uses the same data sets. A large 5 number of backward trajectories is started in the stratosphere, and from the fraction of these trajectories that has reached the troposphere, the age of air is computed. A pilot study in the tropical stratosphere shows that the age increases with increasing length of the forecast series. Next, for three selected data sets (3-D-Var 1-day and 4-D-Var 3-day forecast series, 10 and 4-D-Var analyses) 5-year backward trajectories are computed that start all over the globe at an altitude of 20 km. For all data sets the computed ages of air in the extratropics are smaller than observed. For 4-D-Var forecast series they are closest to the observations, but still 0.5–1.5 year too small. Compared to the difference in age between the results for the different data sets, the difference in age between the 15 trajectory and the chemistry transport model results is small.

Evolution of Water Vapor Concentrations and Stratospheric Age of Air in Coupled Chemistry-Climate Model Simulations

Stratospheric water vapor concentrations and age of air are investigated in an ensemble of coupled chemistry-climate model simulations covering the period from 1960 to 2005. Observed greenhouse gas concentrations, halogen concentrations, aerosol amounts, and sea surface temperatures are all specified in the model as time-varying fields. The results are compared with two experiments (time-slice ...

Estimation of Stratospheric Age Spectrum from Chemical Tracers

We have developed a technique to diagnose the stratospheric age spectrum and estimate the mean age of air using the distributions of at least four constituents with different photochemical lifetimes. We demonstrate that the technique works using a 3D CTM and then apply the technique to U M S CLAES January 1993 observations of CFCl 1 , CFC12, CHq and N20. Our results are generally in agreement w...

Sensitivity of stratospheric inorganic chlorine to differences in transport

Correctly modeling stratospheric inorganic chlorine (Cly) is crucial for modeling the past and future evolution of stratospheric ozone. However, comparisons of the chemistry climate models used in the latest international assessment of stratospheric ozone depletion have shown large differences in the modeled Cly, with these differences explaining many of the differences in the simulated evoluti...

Seasonal and inter-annual variability of lower stratospheric age of air spectra

Abstract. Trace gas transport in the lower stratosphere is investigated by analysing seasonal and inter-annual variations of the age of air spectrum – the probability distribution of stratospheric transit times. Age spectra are obtained using the Lagrangian transport model CLaMS driven by ERA-Interim winds and total diabatic heating rates, and using a time-evolving boundary-impulse-response (BI...

Evidence of mixing between polluted convectiveoutflow and stratospheric air in the uppertroposphere during DC3

Aircraft measurements, including non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), long-lived halocarbons, carbonmonoxide (CO), and ozone (O3) collected on board the NASA DC-8 during the Deep Convection, Clouds, and Chemistry (DC3) field campaign (May – June 2012), were used to investigate interactions and mixing between stratospheric intrusions and polluted air masses. Stratospherically influenced air masses ...
